The following foods can help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease:-
• Unsalted nuts, seeds, and legumes (4-5 handfuls per week)
• Fish (at least 2 portions per week)
• Fibre 30-45g/day (wholegrain varieties of starchy foods)
• Reducing your intake of saturated fats and salt such as in butter
• Increasing your intake of good fats such as those found in olive oil
• Taking plant sterols with food (1.5-3g/day) such as in fortified yogurt and milk may help to reduce your bad cholesterol.
Exercising regularly
Regular exercise (being active) is important for physical health and well-being.
Exercise or a form of active movement for at least 150 minutes a week is recommended (about 20 minutes a day). This could include a brisk walk or using the stairs. 10-minute bursts are as effective as longer time spent exercising, as long as you do your 150 minutes a week.
Strengthening exercises are also important, especially as you age.
